To many, Jeffreys Bay
is all about the surfing. It is common trivia that Jeffreys Bay
derived it´s fame from being discovered as a place that has one of the best right hand point breaks in the world. In the early days, hippies from all over the world would settle on the dunes and live off the sea, anticipating the next great swell.
Surf is very consistent most of the time, but the best waves can be ridden from May to Augustwhen strong cold fronts from the South West bring good ground swell. The general water temperature is cooler than Durban, but rarely get as cold as Cape Town. There are several different setups where surfers of all levels can slip into perfect waves.
Starting from North to South: Kabeljouws Beach Break, Albatros, Point, Tubes, Coins, Salad Bowls,Supertubes, Boneyards, Beach Break (In front of Checkers), Secrets, Caravans, Main Beach (Dolphin Beach) Kitchen Windows and Phantom Reef. Most breaks in Jeffrey's are reef breaks and booties are advised if you do not know your way around.
Jeffrey's Bay surf operates best with a SSW swell and wind. For proper surfable waves to form, the wave period should be above 10 seconds.
